Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
