No fewer than thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
